10:45 AM - 12:45 PM  For those wanting to experience a shorter ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway and a quicker route to Shatley Springs Inn north of Little Switzerland, this drive is it.

Meet at the parking lot in front of the shoppes at Switzerland Inn.
12:45 PM - 2:30 PM  The Early Early Event - Celebrating the Blue Ridge Parkway!

Since its inception, BRBS has centered around the Blue Ridge Parkway, and each year we have enjoyed its splendor and beauty.

Also, Shatley Springs Inn has been a landmark destination for many of our events in the past.

This year, in honor of the Parkway and our rich tradition of attending fun places to eat, our Early Early Event will take us back to Shatley Springs Inn where we'll enjoy country cooking, the famous spring water, and beautiful mountain scenery.

Address for Shatley Springs Inn: 407 Shatley Springs Road, Crumpler, North Carolina 28617

After eating a family style meal as a whole group, folks can visit the gift shops or take a walk around the lake. Others can sit and rest a spell in the rocking chairs on the porch.

We'll be seated for lunch at 1:00 p.m. If arriving from somewhere other than Switzerland Inn, plan to be at the Inn about 12:45 p.m.

If leaving from Switzerland Inn, as noted above, we have trip options for those wanting to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway most of the way or just part of the way.
2:30 PM - 6:30 PM  Mosey back to Little Switzerland. Take in West Jefferson's Ashe County Cheese Factory and Store, Saint Mary's Episcopal Church and its renowned frescoes, shop the downtown stores, or just head to wherever your heart and Boxster takes you!
6:30 PM - 10:00 PM  Join other early-arriving folks at Switzerland Inn's Outdoor Terrace overlooking the pool and the Catawba Valley for an evening of food and fun. In the event of rain, folks will be in "Die Geflügelspiel-Kneipe—The Fowl Play Pub" at Switzerland Inn.

10:00 AM - 3:30 PM  The Early Event

Because of the action-packed schedule this week, we've decided to have a "Laid-Back Wednesday" as our Early Event!

We'll be posting short side-trips here for folks to take individually or in small groups. Consider doing one of the following, or just hang out at the Inn and enjoy the beautiful scenery, pool and surroundings.

If you'd like to put something together between now and the start of the event and invite others to join you, email us and we'll add it to the list.

If you just want to go with the flow, gather in the lobby of Switzerland Inn at 10:00 a.m. and see what people are doing.

The day is yours to relax and enjoy.
  • Visit Woody's Chair Shop at 34 Dale Road, Spruce Pine, NC

  • If you missed Monday's trip to Moondoggy's Diner in Marion, NC on Monday, head there for lunch.

  • Go to Whiteside Mountain and hike the 2.5-mile trail above the sheer 750-foot high cliffs which offers outstanding views to the east, south and west

  • Shop in any of the quaint towns around Little Switzerland, including Spruce Pine, Bakersville, Burnsville and Morganton.

  • Go to Mt. Mitchell State Park and take in the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland eastern North America.

  • Visit Chimney Rock State Park - For BRBS I, we caravanned here and over the years have been back periodically until the elevator went out! The elevator is still out which is why we haven't been back, but folks can take stairs to the top.

From its website: "Chimney Rock, the 535-million-year-old monolith for which the Park is named, is considered one of the most iconic sites in North Carolina. From its top, you’ll soak in the 75-mile panoramic views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. You can hike to the top of this towering 315-foot granite outcropping located on the very edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At an elevation of 2,280 feet above sea level, this mountaintop experience will take your breath away."

  • Take a guided boat tour of Lake Lure.  Discover the beauty and charm of Lake Lure on a covered boat tour. Listen to the legends of the lake and learn about the natural and cultural history of Hickory Nut Gorge.

  • Ride the LaZoom Comedy Bus in Asheville. BRBS did this a couple of years ago as an early event. If you missed it then, or would like to do it again, the 2:00 p.m. bus would finish in time for you to get back to the Switzerland Inn in time for dinner.

  • Tour Wicked Weed Brewery in Asheville. The 3:00 tour would finish in time for you to get back to the Switzerland Inn in time for dinner. Consider eating first, and then taking the tour.

  • Tour New Belgium Brewing Company in Asheville. We were going to make this a Fun Run this year, but the limited food offerings nixed that idea. Still, for live story-telling, beer-sampling, and art-gazing fun, it's worth a visit. You can eat elsewhere, such as at Pack's Tavern.

  • Tour Sierra Nevada Taproom in Asheville. In case you missed it last year, this is an excellent brewery tour, and the restaurant is commendable.

  • Take in the Biltmore House and Gardens. We can't get you discounted pricing on this day, but if you want to go early because you plan to go on other Fun Runs on Thursday and Saturday, consider going this day. The Chihuly large-scale glass sculptures are on display in the House and Gardens.

  • Sleep late and then drive our very own Diamondback with its 190+ steep, climbing, sweeping curves, amazing scenery and cool mountain breezes in just 12 miles. Spend the day going clockwise, then counter-clockwise, rinse, repeat. Or, you can:

  • Get up early, head three hours west to Deals Gap, NC, and experience the Tail of the Dragon with its 318 curves in 11 miles. Or, you can:

  • Get up early, head three hours north to Tazewell, VA, and experience the Back of the Dragon with its 438 curves in 32 miles — Check the website for possible road construction.
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM  Meander back to Switzerland Inn to get ready for the Opening Dinner.
5:30 PM - 6:30 PM  Meet folks in "Die Geflügelspiel-Kneipe—The Fowl Play Pub" at Switzerland Inn for an early libation.
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM  BRBS Meet and Greet at the Outdoor Terrace with Boxster Bingo!!

Old-timers will remember this as a fun ice-breaker to meet new folks and get reacquainted with old friends. Don't miss this, as your Bingo card is your ticket to dinner.
7:30 PM - 9:30 PM  "StraßenrandpicknickRoadside Picnic" - Opening Dinner included in registration in The Chalet at the Switzerland Inn; outside, weather permitting.

We kick off "20 Jahre" with a roadside picnic — meet new friends, catch up with old ones, and find out more about what's in store over the next few days.

Dress: You've-just-arrived-from-whatever-you-did-on-your-Laid-Back-Wednesday-day-or-from-a-long-day's-travel-from-home dress. We just want to see your smiling faces!
10:00 PM - 10:30 PM  Brief meeting of the Fun Run Team Leaders in the Main Lodge lobby
10:00 PM - ??  Retire to the “Die Geflügelspiel-Kneipe”—a/k/a The Fowl Play Pub—and join your new and old friends for fun and fellowship, drinks and music!

  1. Grandfather Mountain Fun Run

Grandfather Mountain has held a special place in the hearts of BRBS folks ever since BRBS III when the event moved to Blowing Rock, NC. We were even featured in Panorama magazine with a "panoramic" photo of the entire group at the base of the Mountain.

Keith & Tina Felts and Jim & Teresa Covington will lead a group back to the Mountain where folks will experience the Mile High Swinging Bridge, America's highest suspension footbridge which gives visitors breathtaking panoramic—there's that word again!—views.  The group will also have a guided tour of the habitat area.

Meet Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the southwest Parking Lot in front of Heidi Suites and beside the tennis courts for last minute instructions; please be prompt.  Arrive on foot.  Do not bring your cars.  The group will have to leave from both parking lots due to its anticipated large group size.

The first hike will leave the visitor’s center on a scenic and easy 1.6-mile roundtrip walk to High Falls, billed as one of Transylvania County’s most spectacular waterfalls.

The group will then relocate one mile to the Triple Falls parking area for two short hikes.

The first is to Hooker Falls, a half-mile roundtrip. Then the group will head in the other direction to Triple Falls along a beautiful and moderately difficult trail for a roundtrip total of 1.2 miles. The total distance of the three hikes is 3.3 miles.

Participants can take in all the hikes or peel off from the group at any time.

Those who hang in can find late lunch nourishment at any of several good restaurants in Brevard, a 25-minute drive from Triple Falls back in the direction of Little Switzerland. If there's still have a hankering for waterfalls, wonderful Looking Glass Falls is a 15-minute drive from Brevard and can be viewed from the road.

Boxsters can then either meander back to Little Switzerland along the parkway or find a faster route on the interstate.

This Fun Run is being led by Bradley Anderson and Karen Kustafik. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, dress in layers for varying cold and warm temperatures and have rain gear handy. Bring a water bottle and lots of snacks since lunch will be late. Plan to spend the day if you participate in all of the hikes and the lunch in Brevard.

A few took the gems they personally mined and had them made into exquisite jewelry, being able to tell their friends and family they had actually been the ones who mined the stones!

Because of their positive feedback, we're offering this venture again this year.
